Career growth, strategic influence and leadership challenges await the professional who joins a prominent builder as its next director of purchasing in San Antonio. This division is expected to close 950 homes in 2014, with plans for aggressive expansion and diversification of product lines in the next few years. That investment reflects the San Antonio region’s status as one of the most stable and promising in the country. In addition to the potential offered by this market, the organization truly values the role of purchasing. This position offers inroads to opportunities nationally in category management and in other areas like construction and land.
Working with the division president and vice presidents in finance, sales and construction, the new director of purchasing will help facilitate this division’s expansion. This person will craft purchasing strategy while leading a staff of 10 direct reports. Responsibilities will encompass plan and trade-base management for a high-volume division, including contract negotiations, production capability assessments and quality control. Other duties will include house cost management, department budget planning, employee development, vendor selection and management of standard features and options. He or she will also work with the finance team during the feasibility process for new communities.
The position requires seven to 10 years of relevant experience, along with three to five years in management. While a background in purchasing is preferred, the company is open to considering homebuilding professionals from other backgrounds if they have the right attitude, ambition and leadership attributes. A bachelor’s degree is required, with an ISCM accreditation preferred. All candidates should demonstrate an ability to negotiate in a cost-transparent environment while cultivating partnerships with vendors. The successful candidate will also possess an analytical mindset, self-motivation and the ability to communicate well with people at all levels of the organization.
